Surviving the Sands of Arrakis
Dune: Awakening is more of an experiment than being a pure masterpiece. Funcom’s open-world survival RPG is set in the Dune universe. It offers a lot of practicality and has some high points, but it also shows growing pains. The game is rich with danger, atmosphere, and plenty of systems interacting. However, it does not always fully stick the landing. In this Dune: Awakening review, I am here to begin with key features and gameplay.

Setting & Story Frame
In this game, you will be sent to Arrakis by the Bene Gesserit to uncover the mystery of missing Fremen. You will get the opportunity to communicate with iconic characters like Feyd-Rautha and Duke Leto. Also, you will explore spots like Hagga Basin and Arrakeen and uncover lore as you go. The story feels like it is trying to connect the familiar and the new.
Survival, Crafting and Building
These are core to the game. You will build large installations or camps, craft tools and weapons, construct ornithopters and bases. Environmental hazards, stillsuits and sandworm threats, and other survival touches pull you into the harshness of Arrakis in this game.
Open World Exploration
The expanses of Fremen Territories, mountain peaks, hidden caves, and desert everything is not only attractive but also dangerous. You can get speed and verticality in the game with movement tools like the flying ornithopter and Shigawire hook. Tension develops in the game with daylight exposure and environmental effects like sandstorms.
Multiplayer & Dynamic Experience
In Dune: Awakening, you have the option to play either solo or co-op. At times, you can play PvP. The game has a shared world that lets you associate with other players. Some contents of the game scale accordingly. The choice of allegiances adds replay potential.
Overall Feel
For me, Dune: Awakening feels ambitious. The world-building of Arrakis – Its emptiness, threats, and heat punctuated by danger. This is an impressive feature of the game. Surviving there is not simply about building and fighting. However, they are about managing threats, daylight, and resources. Sometimes, it is all about just spotting shelter. The landscapes are attractive, and you will get a sense of scale. However, it is not even. Some mechanics in the game feel polished. Some of them are interim, while some feel rough. Content density, balancing, and performance differ. However, it is newer and some systems are not as deep or as tight as veterans might hope.
