When I first saw the trailer to Steep I lost my shit.  Finally, a next-gen 1080 Snowboarding, hell yeah!  However, at least on the PC, the experience was somewhat disappointing.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good game, but nowhere near as great as it could be.

Let’s start with the controls; it is relatively easy to pull of crazy stunts because it is mostly about holding down your directional bad.  The game is more focused on timing rather than your button pressing skills, which kind of makes sense, but if you have any input lag whatsoever the game is completely ruined for you.  And, unfortunately, that was the case for awhile.  It took me a lot of tweaking and optimizing to reduce the controller lag, and that’s really not acceptable for a PC that can run most games on high.

Once you get past the settings and have solved the input lag the games starts to shine through in small doses at a time.  The scenery is breath taking, and it is a lot of fun just exploring the alps bit by beautiful bit.  As a matter of fact, one of my friends managed to fool a few people into believing that game-play footage was actual real-life footage.  Game certainly gets bonus points for the amazing graphics.

Unfortunately, when you dig a little deeper into what Steep has to offer you will find that it gets a bit repetitive, fun but very repetitive. A lot of the challenges and courses get stale, pretty quickly — and that has a lot to do with the fact that it is very easy to master this game.  As I mentioned earlier, it’s all about timing, and once you get into the rhythm of things you are a pro.  The challenge kind of dies off.

I feel as if Steep is a huge missed opportunity for the killer winter sports game.  It’s close, but not quite there, and I truly feel that it might be a couple of patches down the way.  I would like to see the addition of player hubs in the form of just chilling in some of those cabins. A more immersive spectator mode wouldn’t hurt too.  The game gets away with the multi-player side of things being very instanced.  You wont see many people if you aren’t by a starting flag of a challenge or a course.

Steep is good.  It is not what I hoped it would be, but it is definitely worth checking out.  It might be a little more enjoyable on console, I don’t feel it was all too well optimized for the PC; it had issues even on a low setting and for that it takes a huge hit to the over-all score!
